Organizational Profile

Reducing Pain, Increasing Entitlements

1. Background
Koshi victims Society (KVS) is a non-governmental, non-profit making social organization established in May 2003. It is registered with District Administration Office, Saptari and is affiliated with Social Welfare Council (SWC). The headquarter of organization is in Rajbiraj, Saptari and branch of office is in Sunsari.

Terai district is every year affected by floods and almost all the VDCs get affected by different rivers including the Koshi River. Dam constructed as per the Koshi Agreement and deforestation in the Churia Hills are considered as the root causes of increasing flooding and suffering of the people. However, the affected people are not provided with the compensation as agreed. Therefore, the intellectuals, right activists and legal experts established the organization.
Nepal has an area around 147181 sq, km of which 20% land is used fro agriculture. Some 17% of the total agriculture land of the country lies in Terai plain. The terai forms the part of the Indo-Gangetic plain, on the Nepal side of the boarder. It is approximately 30km. wide with a surface area of 29000 sq. km. This plain is not continuous from east to west but is divided into three parts by southern spurs of chauria hills. The soil of Terai is very fertile.

The Koshi River has a catchment area of about 74,500 sq.kms. Of this around 85 percent is located in Tibet and Nepal and the remaining portion lies in India. The river has a total length of 468 kms. of which 248 kms. is in the Indian territory. The maximum observed peak flow in the river is reported to be 25,880 cumecs at Barahkshetra, in Nepal, and the annual average run-off is to the tune of 68282 million cubic meters. The river carries a silt load of about 9495 Hect. Meters annually. The rainfall in the Indian portion of Koshi catchments area is 1276 mm. The Koshi debauches into the plains near Chatra in the Saptari district of Nepal and enters Bihar near Bhimnagar in the Supaul district.
On the western Koshi embankment on the flow of the rivers like Mahuli, Khando, Ghordah, Panchi, Mutani, Khadak, Bihul and Balan. For the same region on the eastern side of the eastern embankment, the Fariyani Dhar, Harasnkhi Dhar, Goraho Dhar, Dhemura Dhar, Tilawe Dhar, Hareli Dhar, Basanwara Dhar, Sursar Dhar, Sapni Dhar, Beldaur Dhar, Chausa Dhar, Lachchaha Dhar and Gai Dhar. These rivers are catchment area of the Kosh Basin.

2. Vision, Mission, Goal and Objectives
Vision: Creation of empowered, self-reliant and equitable communities

Goal: Create positive changes by increasing community’s voice and participation in achieving overall development of target communities with the proper utilization of local resources and advocacy

Objectives: Carry out the activities for the sustainable development of the country particularly the district, carry out action projects and advocacy for the rights of the people affected by the climate change process, increase awareness on the environmental problems, disaster preparedness and ownership over land and water resources.

3. Major Programme Activities
KVS carries ut various activities to meet the objectives. Its key activities include:

4. Strategies
In order to meet the objectives and carry out the activities, it undertakes following strategies:

C. Research and investigation on the hidden issues related to poor people, affected by disasters
D. Media mobilization
E. Accountability to target groups and donors/partners

5. Target group
The main target groups of the programmes KVS undertakes are:

A. People and communities living in river basin and affected by flood
B. Marginalized, deproved and poor people
C. Women, disabled, children, elderly and other deprived sections in the community

6. Working Area
At the moment, it is carrying out its activities along the river basin area. It will expand the programme each year.

8. Resources
KVS has sufficient human and technical resources to carryout the activities to meet the objectives. It has trained its staff in various issues. At the moment, the organization is run by an Executive Committee of 7 members with 3 female. (Including of Madheshi, Janjati and Dalit.) There are 41 general members including 21 female (Including of Madheshi, Janjati and Dalit.). The organization has 3 member advisor committee with 1 female. It has over two dozens of volunteers supporting the programme activities.

KVS has sufficient organizational resources such as office, furniutures, computers and printers with email and internet facilities.

Health and sanitation

Awareness through rallies campaigns and workshop about health and sanitation.
Safe drinking water at family level for male and female in everyday.
Consciousness development in using toilet.
To save the inject of open latrine diseases.


Vegetable cultivation, fish farming, goat farming and carrying card are increased for income generation.
